suffer from a speech or hearing disorder that will potentially
impair their ability to communicate with others. The Speech & Hearing
Center at SOCH offers the southern Ocean County community a full
service, state-of-the-art resource to treat those suffering from
speech or hearing disorders at one convenient location.
Led by Dr. Steven E. Berman, a board-certified
speech pathologist and audiologist, the treatment team at The Speech & Hearing Center
is committed to improving communication problems through the evaluation,
diagnosis and treatment of speech and hearing disorders. From
young children to older adults, the focus at The Speech & Hearing
Center is on determining the cause of particular speech and hearing
disorders and providing the best treatment available to effectively
improve communication. The Speech & Hearing Center specializes
in diagnosing and treating several specific disorders, such as tinnitus
and vertigo.
The Latest Diagnostic Technology
The Speech & Hearing Center utilizes the most advanced
diagnostic tools to evaluate and diagnose a wide range of speech and
hearing disorders. The Center is equipped to treat children and older
adults in a specially designed hearing lab that can focus on inner
ear problems which may require special care. In addition, the Center
is equipped to administer electrostagmography tests, more commonly
known as ENG tests, which are used to examine the inner ear’s
function and balance mechanism.
Hearing Aid Fitting Lab
The specialized Hearing Aid Fitting Lab that is housed within The
Speech & Hearing Center is one of the most advanced labs of its
kind in the region and is equipped to handle every patient’s
hearing instrument needs. Charles A. Herb, BC, HIS, a board certified
Hearing Instrument Specialist, combines years of experience with state-of-the-art
technology to provide the finest services in evaluating, fitting and
servicing the hearing aid needs of both children and adults.
Specialized Care for Children
The ability to hear and speak clearly is essential for most
people, but even more important for children under the age of five. Nearly
two-thirds of everything people learn in life is learned during the
first five years. Children suffering from a hearing loss during this
crucial time may develop a condition known as Central Auditory Dysfunction,
which can lead to significant learning difficulties when kids enter
school. The physicians and staff at The Speech & Hearing Center
carefully evaluate children who may have Central Auditory Dysfunction
and work closely with parents to discuss the best treatment options.
In addition, The Speech & Hearing Center offers comprehensive
hearing tests for school-age children that go beyond typical school
hearing tests and can identify and evaluate inner ear problems that
may require amplification or other special care.
The Speech & Hearing
Center also provides high quality speech therapy services administered
by board certified speech pathologists who work closely with children
and their parents to effectively treat a wide variety of speech disorders.

The physicians and staff at The Speech & Hearing Center

Approximately half of all Americans over the age of 65 are
affected by a hearing or speech impairment. Whether the problem is
a result from stroke, Parkinson’s Disease or another illness
resulting in a muscle weakness or a brain injury, The Speech & Hearing
Center is equipped to take care of older adults with a comprehensive
hearing and speech program. Additional services include treating patients
